Your company's leave year runs January to December. Simple. Sorted.
Except for the three people on the old contract, whose leave year runs April to March. And that one team where it's always been September, for reasons nobody can now explain.
Until today, Leave Dates gave you two answers to this: use the company's leave year, or align it to the employee's start date. Two options. Take your pick.
And if neither of them was the date you actually needed? Well. We tried to get away from it, but I guess you'll have to like spreadsheets. 📊
NOT ANY MORE.
Pick a date. Any date. 🎯
Every employment can now have its own allowance year start date, and it can be any day of the year you like.
April 1st? Go on. 15 June? Sure. 1 September, for reasons nobody can now explain? We won't ask.
Leave it blank, and the employee simply follows the company allowance year, exactly as before.
It lives on the employee's profile. Go to Settings > Employees, open the employee, and pick the Allowance tab.
A moment of honesty 😅
This one didn't start life as a feature. It started as a bug report.
Our start-date-aligned leave years had a problem with leap years. Set someone's leave year to align with their start date, land near the wrong end of February, and the maths went sideways.
While we were in there fixing it, we had a look at that little "align to start date" tick box and realised it was the actual problem. It answered exactly one question — does this person's leave year begin on the day they joined? — and for everyone whose answer was "no, it begins on some other day entirely", we had nothing.
So we replaced the tick box with a date. It turns out a date is much better at being a date than a tick box is. 🤷
Your existing setup is fine
Nothing to migrate, nothing to re-check.
Anyone currently aligned to their start date has been moved across automatically, keeping the same date they already had. Everyone on the company allowance year stays exactly where they are.
Same leave years, same balances. Just more room to move if you need it.
What this means for you
No more:
- Choosing between "the company year" and "close enough"
- Explaining to Sarah why her leave year starts on her joining date rather than the date in her contract
- Rebuilding an acquired team's leave years by hand
- Leap year maths. Ever. 🎉
One company. As many leave years as your actual working life requires.

Custom allowance years are part of the Plus plan, just like start-date-aligned leave years before them. If you were already aligning leave years to start dates, you've already got this.
