Carer's Leave Act 2023: Supporting those who care for loved ones.

Carers leave act for dependant

It is Carers Week, and in case you missed it, UK Parliament recently passed the Carer's Leave Act 2023, receiving Royal Assent in May. The new law is designed to support the growing number of people who are caring for loved ones.

Carers UK reports that an average of 600 people per day leave the labour market due to the pressure and stress of juggling work and unpaid carer duties.

The new law, which could be enacted as early as April 2024, will ensure that immediately from the date of employment:

  • One week's unpaid leave per year is made available to employees who need to organise care for a relative or dependant
  • Job protection is guaranteed, as with other types of family-related leave.
  • Offers leave flexibility for planned caring commitments.

You can create a custom leave type in Leave Dates to accommodate the new laws. Simply hit the Leave Types tab in your settings and follow the prompts to get your business set up.
